Description

The Karlskirche in Vienna  is considered the most important sacred building north of the Alps. It was built at the behest of Emperor Charles VI from 1716 after the last great plague epidemic and completed in 1737.

In 1741 Antonio Vivaldi was buried right next to the Karlskirche. It was the imperial patron church until 1918. Today you can experience authentic concerts in the Karlskirche with the Orchestra 1756 and its soloists playing on baroque instruments.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The church is dedicated to the namesake of the Habsburg Emperor, St. Charles Borromeo
  • A panorama lift takes visitors to a platform at a height of 32.5 meters, where they can see the frescoes up close. The view of the church from above is breathtaking.
  • The lush dome frescoes by Johannes Michael Rottmayr cover 1250 m² of blaze of color and show the glory of St. Charles Borromeo
